Fall gutter checklist: get ready before winter

1. Look along every run from the ground: sagging, gaps at the roof edge or plants growing in the gutter mean trouble.
2. Clear leaves once most have fallen, or book a gutter cleaning.
3. Watch it rain: water should leave through the downspouts, not spill over the front.
4. Check seams and corners for drips.
5. Extend downspouts so water lands well away from the foundation.
6. Think about guards if you clean more than twice a year.
7. Fix loose hangers before snow and ice add weight.
